學(xué)了這么多年英語，查字典看到supper 和dinner的意思都是晚飯的意思，到底有什么區(qū)別呢？還是有區(qū)別的。
Dinner 這個(gè)詞本意是正餐，比較主要的，比較豐盛的一餐。這個(gè)詞本身不包含時(shí)間的概念，“豐盛” 是關(guān)鍵。所以，你可以中午吃這個(gè)dinner，你也可以晚上吃這個(gè)dinner 。而在 dinner 這個(gè)詞最開始使用的時(shí)候，在實(shí)際的生活中外國(guó)人也是這么用的。特別是在18，19世紀(jì)國(guó)外的農(nóng)村，經(jīng)常在中午吃 dinner，因?yàn)槌燥柫孙埾挛绾美^續(xù)干活。原則上講，你要是想在早上吃 dinner 也沒有人攔著你，只是要注意減肥。

Google(谷歌)對(duì)這幾個(gè)詞的使用頻率做了調(diào)查，
從上圖你可以看出 dinner （最高那根線）的使用頻率越來越高，而 supper （最低那根線）的使用頻率自1900年以來越來越低。現(xiàn)在在美國(guó)，我很少聽到有人把晚飯叫做 supper，基本都用 dinner 代替了。

也就是說，從十八世紀(jì)一開始，Dinner主要是指午餐，其用餐時(shí)間可早至上午九點(diǎn)或十點(diǎn) 。在法國(guó)，Dinner的時(shí)間從下午兩三點(diǎn)慢慢推遲到六點(diǎn)或更晚。
所以，當(dāng)你中午在某地吃著豐盛的午餐的時(shí)候，其實(shí)你是在吃Dinner 。
二、Supper
接下來我們來看看柯林斯和牛津英語詞典對(duì)Supper的定義：

牛津英語詞典：An evening meal, typically a light or informal one.
柯林斯英語詞典：Some people refer to the main meal eaten in the early part of the evening as supper.

由此可以看出，Supper才是“晚飯”的正解。
需要注意的是，柯林斯英語詞典對(duì)Supper還給出了這樣的解釋：

Supper is a simple meal eaten just before you go to bed at night.

這就相當(dāng)于我們睡覺前吃的“夜宵”，睡前小食。
然而，Dinner與Supper的區(qū)別不僅僅是在其所食不同，它們也存在地域使用差異。比如，在美國(guó)，更為常用的是Dinner，而在加拿大，更為常用的卻是Supper 。
